I had a look at the book on Bavarian Signals by Robert Zintl, and it became clear to me why I had seen so few on photographs. They were obsolete by 1960, and while in Switzerland there often was an impressive row of bells in front of the signal boxes, the Bavarian signal boxes had Läutewerke only for their own lines, and because there were often several boxes in one station, they only had more than one Läutewerk if the box had more than one line to look after. Generally, as Zintl says, Läutewerke were installed at Signal boxes, block posts, linemans huts and occasionally also along the line. He gives no details about the latter case except that they were ment to warn the platelayers.

Hope this helps, Herbert[/i]
