Hello Friends,
today I would like reply to your requests. Some forum members want a step by step description, how I patinate my coaches. Okay, lets start a new project.
The mission is to weather a flat waggon from Piko. The model is over 25 years old, but in new condition, never in use before. A model like this is absolutely rare today. Lets take a look...

You can see, the coach is new and complete original. The challenge is: "Is it possible to make a very old model, to a good model for today time and modern requirements?"
For our first project, we make only light weathering, only basics, not spectacular things.
First we must decompose the waggon...

http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/0f1d4c-1300043579.jpg
...as next we clean up all parts with spiritus and a towel or cloth...
http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/29d680-1300043745.jpg
Now we mix a colour tone rust, I have used the colors that you see here...
http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/69f83b-1300043938.jpg
The colors are Acrylic colours from Revell, and I mix them with water. For this project, we take a airbrush gun with a fine nozzle and needle (0,2). For acceptable results is required a compressor with a constant pressure of 2 bar.
With our rusty color, we paint the waggon frame and the bogies. This is only the first paint layer and must be thin and transparent. Also we can paint the wood floor of the waggon with this colour, only as base.
Here are the pics for this step:

http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/60d331-1300045357.jpg
The rest of the rust colour, I have mixed with white (matt) and black (shiny). The colour that i searched was a grey-silver wooden tone, for weathered wood.

Okay, that is the result...
http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/e3155c-1300045665.jpg
For the next step we need a dirty black clolour, for this is take the rest of the wooden grey, and give additional dark black (matt). good shaking...
...and then paint the waggon frame and the bogies again with this colour. Be carefull, the labels must remain legible.
http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/e8aa6e-1300046092.jpg
The same procedure must do for the additional parts of the waggon:
http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/40b3b1-1300046227.jpg
...and the rest of the colour, I have used for the containers. On the picture you see left a painted and rigth a original container.
http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/de4cae-1300046360.jpg
For a realistic weathering, we need different colours for the containers...
http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/0372fb-1300046468.jpg
The stakes we colorize first with rust and second with black. The same like the frame and the bogies. This time we take a normal paint brush...
http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/0f3a8d-1300046829.jpg
http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/92aaf7-1300046848.jpg
The wheels of the model are not acceptable today. Because this, we change them, and use wheels in RP25. These wheels must be also painting, also this time with a mix of rusty and black...
http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/adfed7-1300047048.jpg
http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/2f90a8-1300047069.jpg
Now we can compose all parts and take a look on the waggon...

http://www.bilder-space.de/bilder/d45e9d-1300047316.jpg
Okay, now we see a few deficits. The wooden floor is crooked, the handwheels are broken or have a ugly plastic shine. The Stakes not fits in the holes, but all of them we can repair.
Here are the Pics of the final version. The waggon is very universally useable, here we see the wagon for transportation of heavy loads (tractors, machines etc.)

I hope that was enough for the first round, the next project can be a individualized passenger car, this is the next level for interests...
