Tim:
I found this forum while researching modelling branchlines for Bavaria in 2008. This research involved looking at the archives of this and other forums for useful data and a friendly forum membership. In the past year or so, I have noticed a number of old members have stopped submitting and responding to this forum. This is possibly due to the lack of beneficial threads or ornery membership. Most likely this is because there are numerous new forums discussing the same subjects and this has diversified the membership. I hope that the decline not continue and this forum continues to be the leader as the English language German Rail reference.
One Possible solution and one use on the German HO-modelforum, is publish a format FAQ "sticky" for establishing the questions for a model layout. Perhaps this would be beneficial for this forum as well. I find it beneficial on that forum for reading the interests of the submitter in one entry. The format also provides the submitter with enough quesitons (and links to FAQ) to keep the discussion helpful.

Planning Aid - FormImproved Translation is recommended!
Who wants to help plant planning, can provide the other members of the forum valuable information using this form. Out the form in the orange box (see below) Mark & copy in your own thread. Then answer the questions as much as possible.
Which track system will be used?
If you do not care because you have not yet created track material, for example, please tell us at least if 2-wire or 3-wire DC current. Also if you want to install flex track we are interested.
If you want to track material has already (eg from childhood) and use this, the parts here as well - preferably with a list of what you've got everything.
How much space do you have available?
The information may be given in the form of numerical values, such as "I have a 3x1m plate on which is to be built" due or betray us, how much space is available in the room, preferably with a sketch where already existing pieces of furniture and the doors and windows are located. If you only give us dimensions, do not forget to specify from which pages you can get near the place.
End station?
A head-end station or a train station, which is connected on only one side at a distance, on the other side of the tracks end. If no Wendezuggarnituren used trains to be implemented here, ie the locomotive does the other end of the train in order to start the return journey can. This may be an attractive operation, on the other hand it also means that you can not let go endlessly in circles trains. Helpful information would be: Never / ifs otherwise go / Absolutely yes!
Continuousor End-End?
Some model railroaders want their trains sometimes simply see only drive in circles. How is that on your system? Helpful answers would be: Never / Possibly / Absolutely yes!
Minimum radii
What is the smallest radius of a) visible and b) not to be in the visible range, such tunnels used. The greater realism to the gaming experience, but also the space required. If you're making disclosures à la R5, please specify to the track system, since the term is not entirely uniform. Käönnen also be useful answers like: "when going Roco R5, R4, if necessary, but also, under any circumstances."
Era
Should your facility be located in a particular era? If so, which. Or perhaps you do not know but have other structures or rolling stock to define the area
Which Topology should Your system model?
By this we mean, for example, cross-track and / or main line, the region, so Alps or North German moors, quaint villages, industrial area, port .....
What vehicles are to be used?
If you've been driving more, or are planning to buy your favorite Driving Show, tell us, so this will also fit the system. The number and type of cars is interesting eg for platform lengths.
Which buildings are up to?
You want to be sure the reception building town or it just has the foundry of Faller with like? Then tell us this. Maybe you can gradate even if something is really up with, or whether it would be nice if it were.
What operating points should be on the system?
We think here of railway-owned operating locations such as train depot (boiler house / coach house), goods shed, loading ramp, as well as private industry connections. Also track features such as bridges, tunnels and level crossings fall into here. Another step would be Will I be called / Would be nice sensible.
The shadow station
A shadow station is a group of siding in non-visible area of the plant. Here you can park the trains until they come back into use. Tell us if you want to have (highly recommended!) How many of the sidings should have and how long should a shadow station.
Operation
How do you want to operate your system, or which represent operations? The answers listed are sample answers, can you tell us your wishes and even formulate.
• as much distance where I can watch the trains
• extensive shunting the goods yard
• Operation of many industrial connectors
• Interchange (eg, main and branch line, or standard gauge / narrow gauge)
Who should play on the system?
It is also interesting for coherent planning, how many people are going to do on the system operation. And whether it is primarily a facility for children who should be as "safe", or at least want to make adults more "correct" operation.
Control analogue, digital or PC?
This has for the planning, not the top priority - but it certainly affects the operational possibilities, whether an automated operation is to take place via a PC or set the route segments by hand and vehicles should be controlled.
Anything else?
Demands on your system yet, we have not yet collected? Here is your chance!
Perhaps this or a similar form would have helped Stuart and others.
