BUSCH, HEKI, FALLER, and others are providing a such variety of great new scenic materials never available before. Some of it is well worth it.
Some scenic materials however don't need to be bought.
Recently while in my local hobby shop I watched someone buy "logs" for a flat car load. Essentially they were twigs in a package. The same person then bought a small bag of sand for roads and scenery.
Another way to cut cost on scenery material is to go outside the "man cave" and see what is available in your yard, local park, fields, or nursery for example. While walking my "Woofie" in local fields I often came across scrub that can be used for trees and logs. Our city uses a lot of sand on our roads during our long icy winters. I scooped up some of it and run it through several screens / sives. Amazing the different size gravel, rocks, dirt for pathways roads etc. Nurseries often toss out plants. Depending on the plant, when clean and dried, the roots make nice trees. Buy the way, ground coffee when dried after use is great scenic material as well. Smells good too ! Take a look through your local bulk food store. Either that of plan a commando raid on the wifes spice pantry. Parsley, oregano and other dried goods can be used for scenic material. I used some dried dill as grass around my track and those areas were weeds grow. If you use foam insolation board check with your local building supply stores. Some will give or sell you at a reduced cost damaged sheets.
